In which a cursed shield and concerning how they break it, in which our intrepid mages and Umaro climb a tower, of what they find at the summit.

This guy locked himself in a house and only Locke can get him out. |
He'll either forge it into the Ragnarok sword or leave it as a Ragnarok magicite. I chose the sword, as you can learn Ultima through other methods. |

Breaking the curse is the most amazingly ball-bustingly tedious thing ever, and I found out the ribbon negates the bad things because this is the Cursed Shield, not the Ensanguined Shield, so I could do some dungeon crawling with slightly decreased stats and not have to run around Cid's island fighting a bunch of fluffy rats. Sigh. After 255 battles equipped on someone who is not Gogo, it becomes the Paladin Shield, which teaches Ultima and has advantages. |

What we haven't done is actually climed the Fanatics' Tower for the treasure on top. This time we're going prepared with our best spellcasters and... Umaro? What the hell is he doing here? Anyway, remember how the Fight command is replaced with Magic and you have nothing to use but magic and items? Umaro can ignore that and wail on the enemies. So can a berserked character, but that means berserking him. Alternatively, equip Mog with the Moogle Charm and skip all the enemies. Note: You did get Phoenix, didn't you? Life 3 is important. At the very least, have Palidor or Rasp/Osmose. You've seen L.30 Magic before. It absorbs pearl, it's weak to poison, it doesn't reflect, it counters with imp, osmose, or reflect, it uses level 2 spells. L.20 Magic uses Demi/Quartr/Break, Demi/Quartr/X-Zone, repeat. L.20 Magic counters wtith rasp, muddle, or safe. They're dangerous buggers, so kill them quickly. I think it's that yellow-cloaked midget. They reflect, but Umaro will make short work of his ass. Weak to poison. Can be instakilled, if you had a way. After all, L.10 magic is floating. Gotta be that ghost. Level 1 spells, counter with slow, stop, or haste. Haste on himself, I'd imagine. |
L.90 Magic hangs out indoors and near the top. They're strong, they favor flare, meteor, and merton. What the hell's a merton? I don't know, but it's dangerous and wind-elemental, which L.90 absorbs. Counters with stop, bolt 3, or life 3. Floats, reflects, and vulnerable to being stopped. |
Umaro's showing off the blizzard orb, which kills Magic Pots instantly. Magic pots, being on their namesake, think you're either friends or undead, and will heal you. When climbing the tower, you'll find a Safety Bit that protects you from instant kill attacks and is exactly like the Memento Ring if everyone could equip it. Press the action button when standing to the right of the treasure chest. Another door appears below you when you leave, and you can get the Air Anchor, which does some damage and then kills an enemy in the next turn. It's more useful than you think. There's a Genji Shield, which has high defense and reasonable magic block. There's a stunner, which is useful against Seigfried and Mr. Chupon since they're both vulnerable to stop, but almost useless here. |
L. 50 Magic is undead and is breathing pink smoke. It favors poison, bio, and doom, and then uses remedy or dispel on its allies. Damaging leads to a berserk, which I fail to see as a bad thing, or a slow or haste 2 spell. Weak to the stuff undead enemies usually are, and does not reflect. |
No, I'm not sure which one is which. L.40 magic uses drain, break, or vanish, counters with mute or sleep, weak to lightning, can be muted, absorbs poison, and doesn't reflect. L.60 magic uses quake, W Wind, and Pearl, and counters with osmose,. He's floating, but so is the other guy, so I can't just say, oh, he's that harlequin guy. He absorbs ice, so he probably is. Ice is blue, after all. Being weak to lightning suggests water suggests umbrella. Does not reflect. |
L.70 Magic is a Wrexsoul palette swap. Surrounded in an aureole of fire and therefore absorbs it and is weak to ice and water. Uses level 3 spells and counters with sleep. Can be muted, reflects. |
White Dragon is pearl-based and casts Pearl a lot. He can't attack, so just mute him. Easy. You'll see him on the Veldt later, but don't get Paerl Lances for it like you do here. Steal there. Or steal here by equipping Locke with the thief knive and berserking him, hoping to get something like another pearl lance or just an X-Potion. After that, there's a Force Armor to get, and make sure you do. And you've killed all but two of the dagrons, hopefully. |

L.80 Magic has a convoluted script. If a character is reflecting, she'll use Cure 2, Remedy, or Haste. If a monster is reflective, she'll bounce level 3 spells off of them. If nobody reflects, she'll use poison and bio. If she's damaged, she'll use cure 3, cure, or Life 3 on a reflecting character. The Cult of Kefka's brainwashing did a lot to her psyche, as she is unaware and apathetic about Life 3 penetrating the reflect status. If a monster is reflecting and she's damaged, she'll bounce pearl, stop, or dispel off of them. If nobody's reflecting, she'll do nothing. Weird. |

The summit. Don't save after entering the door. Do not. |
In that door is the Gem Box, a not terribly useful item that is like the Offering for magic. Now go outside. |
Uh oh, the Krazy Kefka Kult is after you. They allow a ghost through and... |

It's Magimaster, the closest thing in this game to an uberboss. If you had a berserked Locke, you could try to steal a Crystal Orb, but it's not even close to worth it. Unlike many bosses, this one can't be vanished-doomed. He goes like this: Level 2 spell. Level 3 spell. Doublecast level 3 spell. Again. Level 3 spell. Doom/Bio/Mute. Repeat. He has a high magic power. Reflect if you want. If he's reflecting, which he won't be, he'll bounce level 3 spells off of himself. No reason to let him do that. Cast life 3 on yourself. You'll see why. |
Here I summon Alexander, which looks cool but does nothing here. Before that, I berserked him. You don't have to Vanish, but Vanish might help. Umaro doesn't do much, as MagiMaster has an obscene defense. |

This is Ultima. It does a fuckload of damage. Specifically, somewhere around 5400 and 6100. That means you'll survive if you're around 58 and have red caps or 67 without anything to boost your HP. If not, you need Life 3. Life 3 resurrects you immediately after dying, and the battle ends as a narrow victory. If you didn't have that, well, you could try using Palidor in hopes that at least one character is airborne when MagiMaster plays his trump card. Or you could rasp away his MP until he is unable to use Ultima, making sure he's berserked and you're vanished. If you don't have that, you could, um, you could equip a wall ring, genji glove, MP-critical weapon and MP-draining weapon on a berserked and hasted Celes/Terra to whittle away his MP, while berserking someone with a heal rod in the hopes that MagiMaster doesn't die when he can still cast Ultima. Put on a cup of coffee, take a shower, take a walk; this will take a while. If you don't have that? Um... well, why in the nine heavens did you decide to come here? This is piss-poor planning in action, and for your own sake, I hope you didn't save right after getting the Gem Box and you have a save elsewhere that isn't too far away if you did. Um... I suppose that you could wait it out. Maybe cast reflect on him if someone can absorb something and wait for him to use up all his MP, but that could take hours. There's no reason to come here if you can't do it. Gem box? Who needs it? |

This is the result of W. Wind casted by my own character. This is also why you don't use that spell ever. |
This is Bahamut. Since he does a reasonable jorb on these enemies, I figured I'd show off Sun Flare here. It's non-elemental, it's all targets, and it's powerful. |
